Cigar Life

Sigmund Freud is credited for the quote “sometimes a cigar is just a cigar” but as of late a cigar just like its construction has had a lot deeper presence in the social world. Now more than ever for those of us 25 years or older the hookah and vape is starting to lose its grasp and the allure of the Cigar scene has taken hold.

I don’t consider myself to be an aficionado by any means however, over the last few years I am come to enjoy the cigar arena and picked up the swag of the cigar legends I’ve gotten to know. First, let’s get you ready for what you're walking into if you haven’t dabbled in these waters before. What to wear? Believe it or not; what you wear has a lot to do with your experience smoking your cigar. You want to be comfortable but stylish, relaxed, and casual. Smoking a cigar is a relaxing thing, so you want to do just that. I once walked into a lounge directly after work and the elders gave me hell for wearing a tie. “Your too fancy for this place” and “next round on Mr. Moneybags over here”, it was all in fun but it left an impression you’re going to have a good time so relax.

Breath Check Surprisingly what on your pallet is important as well. You want to eat before having cigars (and most times drinks) so be aware of what you’ve had to eat. That also brings up Pairings, and what I mean by that is there are a couple of things that bring out the flavors of cigars just like with wines. Almonds, Dark Chocolate, Coffee, and Fruit bring out the greatness of cigars because of the natural flavors in the tobaccos that are used to build a cigar. Also, what are you drinking with it? Beer, wine, liquors, etc. My personal favorite is a good dark liquor with a medium to full body cigar. I could go deeper but that’s another much blog post.

Atmosphere Remember this is a lounge setting so enjoy the vibe. All cigar spots are a little different so feel the room. There are some, that are bars so expect more of a bar feel while some are old school and quiet with the occasional long-retired gent that is the expert of all. Either one you enter, go with an open mind and enjoy yourself, make some connections, and expand your horizons. If nothing else, you will at least be able to advise someone else on checking out their first cigar night. This is a great alternative if you’re not feeling the night clubs or if you just want to try something different from the ordinary.

A couple of “Pro Tips” to keep in mind.

· If you’ve never been to a cigar lounge or never smoked a cigar, it’s just fine to talk to the staff about getting started. It’s a social thing so don’t be shy.

· You only fill your mouth with the smoke… Trust me it will not end well if you treat it like a cigarette or a hookah.

· The smell will get into your clothes and hair so: Sit outside if you can. (If you're not used to it yet)

· * Ladies – dryer sheets eliminate the smell from your hair if you’re not ready to wash it yet.
