Today, I faced the challenging realization that while some of my friends are equally informed and educated when it comes to politics it is a very touchy subject, to say the least. So as the country settles with its decisions on who will be the next leader of the free world I am here to give you the modern and distinguished way of staying on top as the leader of your circle. First and foremost, remember you are dealing with anywhere from 2-12 different personalities and belief schemas. With that in mind always keep an unbiased and unbothered standpoint. I’m not telling you to be nonchalant, however, as the “commander and chief” of your inner power nation, no matter your stance, YOU must stay NEUTRAL!

Next is a very simple concept but is seldom or never done… Hear everyone out! Your uninformed BFF is ranting all the stuff they heard last night on the Daily Show with Trevor Noah, and while you may have verified all your facts, hear them, their voice, and their points out and keep your cool. People in general most times just want to feel heard and understood. Just sit back and take in what they are saying and though you may not agree, it is important to make sure you hear them.

Three! Have an exit strategy, if someone is pushing their ideas and or beliefs on you have a way to cut out of the conversation and regain your footing. You are the Alpha Male or Female, so don’t be rocked. Here are a couple of good exit strategies: 1. Get a drink — this gives you a minute or two to regain your steps. 2. Shift gears — sometimes it’s good to change the subject before spontaneous combustion takes place. 3. Detour — redirect the response in a way that becomes a question, not to argue but for “clarity” I.e. “So what you’re saying is, you would be good with higher taxes for babies under the age of five?”

And Finally, be able to reel them back in. By keeping your head, even in a heated debate, we can come back together and have a drink and laugh and enjoy each other though we have to agree to disagree. “Hey guys let’s bring it back, both of you have valid points, Babies paying taxes would improve the deficit but at the same time, they are too young to pay taxes to start with. Ha-Ha-Ha, who wants another glass of wine?”
