the art of Approach

Updated: Mar 30, 2021

There they are…the fashionable girl you’ve seen but never gotten the chance to speak to; or the fine brother shopping right there in your line of sight. Just like that reality hits... you're confronted with the question, "how do you walk up and talk to this person without looking, sounding, or feeling like a complete idiot?" Help has arrived with some tips to make sure your confidence in your approach and your chances of getting past hello are far better than you would normally imagine.

What to say?

This, my friends, is a commonly overlooked key to success, grandma used to say “if you can’t say anything nice say nothing at all.” That old fact still holds, and the most meaningful openers are usually non-threatening and non-corny. You want to be taken seriously and be seen as someone intriguing, beyond a dumb expression and a book of bad pickup lines. If you're a woman, and you are interested in that spicy guy from the office. Or you’re the lost soul in the mailroom wishing to talk to that blazing hot secretary upstairs… HAVE SOMETHING TO SAY! Your approach should start simple, merely say hello and strike up a conversation. If you’re personable and confident, it will show and they will respond.

Make conversation!

Take your time and talk to this person and see if this is someone you even want to talk to! I know it sounds bizarre but have you ever met someone who was great until they opened their mouth? Yep let’s not live that nightmare again!!! So have a conversation, small talk, nothing too deep and see if you want to talk a little more later. This removes all the pressure off of it. This is always a plus; no one should be under pressure when meeting a new person.

Time to seal the deal!

This one is the easy part… before your conversation hits an awkward silence where you both are left feeling weird, go ahead and ask something like “hey can we talk more later?” or “I would love to chat more, are you on social media?” We are all people, and this is not a guaranty of getting their number but if you are confident in your approach you may be pleasantly surprised.

PS – Practice makes perfect! To build up your confidence, work on your small talk and being open to discussions.

As Always.
